Each Day is Valentine’s Day
So I thought it’d be fun to do a recording of My Funny Valentine, since it’s a pretty cool song and it’s also almost Valentine’s Day. Not that I particularly like the holiday, being single and all… I like the song because it’s got weird mixed signals. Like the lyrics are somewhat upbeat, but the music itself is so freakin’ sad!
Anyway, here’s me playing My Funny Valentine along with a cool dude named Jamey Aebersold. I recorded it using the iSight from my Macbook, and the built in mic, so the sound quality isn’t the best. Also, I screwed up a few times, but hey, the song itself is about an ideal non-ideal valentine, so my solo doesn’t have to be perfect!
And here’s the lyrics in case you don’t believe me:
My Funny Valentine
My funny valentine
Sweet comic valentine
You make me smile with my heart
Your looks are laughable
Unphotographable
Yet you’re my favorite work of art
Is your figure less than Greek?
Is you mouth a little weak?
When you open it to speak?
Are you smart?
But don’t change a hair for me
Not if you care for me
Stay, little valentine, stay
Each day is valentine’s day

Still waiting for that sax solo
Jamey Aebersold! I used his book/CD set to learn some jazz piano myself (I was in high school jazz band). Do you have a fake book and play it (especially the one called “The Real Book,” natch)? Great trumpet solo, btw–I can hear where you messed up but it’s not so bad. Plus I’ve been a devoted fan of your Anime Nano podcast, enough that it inspired me start my own with my friends…
I have the strange urge to listen to some Miles Davis…
Yeah, I have the real book. I think My Funny Valentine is in it too. I just memorized it a long time ago. The Miles Davis version is good, but I really like the Wynton Marsalis version a lot. You can probably hear influences of it in my own solo too. Not that it makes it any better…
great job! is this something you practiced for? how long have you been playing?
kim: Thanks. I didn’t practice or anything per se. There was a time where I’d practice a lot of jazz standards. My Funny Valentine just happens to be pretty easy and the changes are simple. So I just ran through it a couple of times then recorded it. Plus I left a lot of mistakes in. I’ve been playing since I was in middle school. So I guess… about 13 years? That sounds about right.
Good solo, really. I really feel the Marsalis touch, and this solo is good to hear. love your vibrato (especially when you make it a little strong)
